How to Improve Site Structure with Perfect URL for Better Navigation?

While creating a site it is very important how you create your URL of the pages. Many people just make the URLs with some codes, serial nos. and odd nos. like 000123.html or abcd.html or dir1/subdir1/abc.html etc. What I suggest is this kind of URLs completely inappropriate for the search engines as well as the readers or users of your site. Therefore, you can improve your site with proper naming of your URL that could help both for the users and the search engines.

Do Not Create Lengthy Directories for Your Pages or Posts

Normally while we’re using or creating pages in Blogger, the BlogSpot uses to create directories as year/month i.e. 2012/12 or 2012/09 like this; which is very easy to remember for the users and navigate by the search engines. Therefore avoid nesting with excessive directories as, dir1/subdir1/subdir2/folder1/folder2/pagename.html etc. Do not create more than 2/3 directories so that the users will unable to get in which they’re now and the files or pages could found effortlessly.

How to Write Words Properly In URL for Better Navigation?

  • If you’re giving your site name with some codes or odd nos. as page1.html or abcd.html etc. then avoid doing such kind in future and try to use words related to your article, linking with dash (-) symbol in between the words. For example; How-to-Improve-Site-Structure.html
  • The benefit of doing this is it will also help the search engine to find out your page; if you put some keywords in that. For example, see the below screenshot of a word search, where you can see the searched word ‘copyscape’ is also bold in the URL. It means the search engine determining the word from the title, URL and the summary or search description.
  •  However, there are some crucial points which must be remember while making an URL that never use more than one keywords in the URL; for example: copyscape-meaning-copyscape-what-is-copyscape.html etc.
  • In addition, I’ve seen some people use different-different font cases in URL words; such as www.NareshBehera.com (here ‘N’ and ‘B’ are upper case letters) or www.nareshbehera.com/What-Is-Copyscape.html (here W, I, C are upper cases). I suggest the URLs must be lower case for better optimization or navigation by search engines.
  • If your site consist several directories; never create same page names in different directories. For example, if there is a link as “2012/09/what-is-copyscape.html”, do not create another link with same URL ‘what-is-copyscape.html’ in another root directory.
  • Such practices can improve your site structure for better navigation; remember it, once you’ve created an URL for your page you can’t edit or alter in future. Therefore, be careful and focus on the above points before creating any URL for your page.
